Students and faculty are just beginning to think about how AI and tools like ChatGPT can and should be used in college level work. When students use it for writing, analysis, or translation, it is important that they check their syllabus to see what guidance it provides about when using ChatGPT is appropriate, and communicate their intent to use it with their faculty members well before an assignment is due.
There are still many unanswered questions about how to cite or acknowledge usage.
It will take time for standard citation manuals (MLA, APA, Chicago, etc.) to decide how to format AI interactions in academic work, but preliminary guidance is emerging from a number of sources including:
