On a sculptural recreation of a room from an ancient Iraqi palace, in the wake of lootings by Western archaeologists and ISIS Using Arab-language newspapers and wrappers from food products imported from the Middle East, Iraqi American artist Michael Rakowitz (born 1973) has recreated to scale Room H from the Northwest Palace of the ancient Assyrian city of Nimrud (Kalhu).

Ringgold's most formative and influential political works are gathered in this beautifully designed clothbound volume. Spanning mediums such as painting, cut paper works, posters, collage and textile art, the works presented in this publication foreground the artist's explicitly political pieces, for which she deployed new material and formal processes, and developed a radical aesthetics and vocabulary. Organized chronologically, the book allows readers to retrace the artist's foundational creative approaches to contemporaneous social, political and artistic questions. It includes illustrations of individual artworks together with previously unpublished work and archival materials.

A painterly kaleidoscope of Black queer life Bright paint, sequins, rhinestones, fabric, feathers: the paintings of Pittsburgh-based artist Devan Shimoyama (born 1989) resemble midsummer night dreams of alternative masculinities. This lavishly designed catalog, produced for his first institutional solo exhibition in Europe, provides an excellent introduction to Shimoyama's electrifying art.

Charmion von Wiegand started painting figuratively in 1926, when she received encouragement from her friend and painter, Joseph Stella. This comprehensive volume on von Wiegand showcases gloriously illustrated works from all phases of her career. It also contains insightful essays and an array of previously unpublished material from the artist's archives, including correspondence with Mondrian.

An influential painter, printmaker, and teacher, Charles White's work is primarily figurative and concerned with the challenges and triumphs of Black life in America. He created 'images of dignity' that ennobled his subjects while acknowledging the realities of systemic racism and oppression. This volume brings together a biographical overview of White's life, three thoughtful essays about White's work by noted scholars, an in-depth interview about White with contemporary Black artist Bing Davis, and full-page images accompanied by descriptions of approximately forty works by White. In collaboration with The Cuban Arts Group, the Harn Museum of Art at the University of Florida produced a catalogue in conjunction with the exhibition "Under the Spell of the Palm Tree: The Rice Collection of Cuban Art" on view from July 11, 2023 - January 7, 2024. The works in the catalogue and the exhibition are drawn exclusively from the collection of Susie and Mitchell Rice and offer a glimpse into the complexity of culture and history that has inspired Cuban art throughout the 20th century and into the 21st century.

Justice and rebirth: a visual chronicle of the artist who fused Afro-Cuban visual culture with European modernism. This chronological survey traces the Cuban painter and sculptor Wifredo Lam's (1902-82) career from the late 1930s to the '70s, spotlighting the radically syncretic visual language he developed in response to modernism's Eurocentricity. Published for an exhibition at Pace, The Imagination at Work includes paintings, works on paper and rarely seen bronze sculptures, as well as a biography of Lam's life and career by the Latin American art scholar and curator Michaëla de Lacaze Mohrmann, who made curatorial contributions to the gallery's exhibition.

On Ed Atkins' recent video art installation, commissioned for the New Museum in collaboration with Bell Labs' newly reinstated E.A.T. initiative Published for British artist Ed Atkins' (born 1982) major video/installation art commission at the New Museum in New York, this book features a selection of the artist's critical writings and recent works. This new incarnation of the legendary Experiments in Art and Technology (E.A.T) reconnects to the projects initiated in the 1960s by Bell Labs engineers Billy Klüver and Fred Waldhauer, who collaborated with artists such as John Cage, Marta Minujin, Robert Rauschenberg, Stan VanDerBeek, Robert Whitman and others.

A gothic hyperrealism: on the disturbing portraiture of a virtuoso painter. This is the first large-scale survey of the work of Ireland- and Los Angeles-based artist Gottfried Helnwein (born 1948), who is known for his hyper-realistic images and his photo portraits of celebrities such as Mick Jagger, Michael Jackson, Andy Warhol, Arnold Schwarzenegger and Marilyn Manson. In his recent, more provocative images, Helnwein articulates themes of violence and abuse in compelling and shocking ways.

A timely reassessment of the artist's early performances and feminist sculptures, affirming their radical engagements and art historical significance. This volume is a focused look at two bodies of work, the Tirs ("shooting paintings") and Nanas ("dames"), in the experimental 1960s practice of the French-American artist Niki de Saint Phalle (1930-2002). Twenty artists explore the historical shifts embodied by the city of Chemnitz. This book documents a public exhibition project staged in Chemnitz, Germany, which recounts the city's history as a 19th-century industrial center and model of GDR-era socialism. The publication includes projects by an international roster of artists whose work addresses the city's history and urban landscapes more generally.

In less than two decades, Jacoba van Heemskerck (1876-1923) created a powerful oeuvre comprising paintings, woodcuts, glassworks, and mosaics. Hatch examines the artistic network of Ruan Yuan (1764-1849), a scholar-official whose patronage supported a generation of artists and learned people who prioritized epigraphic research as a means of truing the warped contours of Confucian heritage. Their work instigated an "epigraphic aesthetic"--an appropriation of the stylistic, material, and tactile features of ancient inscribed objects and their reproductive technologies--in late eighteenth- and early nineteenth-century artwork.

Korea is still a divided country that apparently never found its way out of the Cold War. The differences between the socialist North, which follows a dynastic leadership cult, and the capitalist South, with its developed democracy, could hardly be greater. Encompassing all areas of life, this divergence is also reflected in the art of the two countries: through the vibrant contemporary art scene in South Korea and the socialist-realist tradition of painting in North Korea, two diametrically opposed artistic attitudes exist in parallel, reflecting the incompatibility of the political systems and the stark differences in the way of life of the populations. Although the pictogram-only narrative in Xu Bing's Book from the Ground can be read by anyone, there is much more to the story of Xu Bing's wordless book than can be gleaned from icons alone. This companion volume to Book from the Ground chronicles the entire project, mapping the history of Xu Bing's novel creation from inspiration to exhibition to publication.

Unnamed Figures, Black Presence and Absence in the Early American North. Across seven long-form essays and several object studies, this publication fleshes out the long history of objects by analyzing how Black representations may have been further marginalized or misconstrued by early American art and material culture. The exhibition explores African American representation in 125 exceptional works of art and material culture produced in New England and the Mid-Atlantic during the long 18th century. Many of the assembled objects feature African American figures in secondary positions to primary white subjects, whereas others wholly eliminate Black presence from the visual landscape of early America.
