ARST 410: Capstone B — Professional Practice

Resources for entering the art world at large

General Advice

An artist's statement is your elevator pitch to your audience and describes the concepts, themes, and process of your work. Typically, it also contextualizes your work within a broader cultural, historical, artistic, and/or social context (e.g., climate change, contemporary recreations of Old Masters' paintings, recreating the experience of a specific space). Speak to the experience you hope the viewer has as they interact with your work, as well as the general purpose—the "why"—that fuels your artistic practice.

Artists' statements should therefore be clear, concise, and descriptive. Aim for 250–500 words.
