Some book reviews are very short
- purpose is to help reader (or library) decide whether or not to purchase a book
- Library Journal, Kirkus Reviews, Publisher's Weekly, Booklist
- tend to come out quickly, close to time of publication of the book
Some book reviews are critical and comparative
- purpose is to help readers understand the content and context
- often cover more than one book on a topic at once to compare and contrast
- can be issued more than a year after a book is published
- depends upon publication cycles of scholarly journals
