About Book Reviews

Most library databases make is easy to filter search results to find book reviews.

Some book reviews are very short

  • purpose is to help reader (or library) decide whether or not to purchase a book 
    • Library Journal, Kirkus Reviews, Publisher's Weekly, Booklist 
  • tend to come out quickly, close to time of publication of the book

Some book reviews are critical and comparative

  • purpose is to help readers understand the content and context 
    • often cover more than one book on a topic at once to compare and contrast
  • can be issued more than a year after a book is published 
    • depends upon publication cycles of scholarly journals
