Using Other Collections to Identify Clothing

Search and browse through search results of the images and photographs in other institutions' collections. 

Use one sorting method at a time and see whether you can find similarities between the clothing or fashion item you are seeking. Make note of the date and relevant keywords, which might help you conduct further—and more specific—research. Example sorting methods could be:

  • Date range
  • Culture / location
  • Textile / fabric / material

 

The Metropolitan Museum of Art – Collections

  • Narrow search results to "Department: Costume Institute"

Victoria and Albert Museum – Collections

Try narrowing down search results by date and/or material.

Fashion Institute of Technology – The Museum – Collections
