Call Numbers and Searching Tips

Physical items in libraries are organized by their call number. Most of the Conservatory Library's items use Library of Congress call numbers. Below are some specific call numbers and ranges to browse for resources on music and technology:

  • M1473: Scores for electronic instruments*
  • ML3790-3792: Music Trade
    • Includes recording arts and production
  • ML3795: Music as a profession
  • TK7800-8360: Electronics
  • TK7881.4:  Audio Engineering Software

*There are more scores in the library for acoustic instruments combined with electronic instruments which are often shelved with their primary acoustic instrument.

Librarians give items subject headings, which is basically just a label, that can give you clues about what a book is about. It can sometimes take guesswork to find the right wording, but here are a few subjects to use when searching our online catalog:

  • Computer sound processing
  • Computer music
  • Electronic music
  • Music and technology
  • Sound -- recording and reproducing
  • Sound recording industry
  • Sound recordings -- production and direction

You'll notice that some of the subjects have dashes: these dashes make your search even more specific. From the list above, we can make some of our searches more specific by adding dashes.

  • Computer music -- history and criticism
  • Computer music -- instruction and study
  • Electronic music -- analysis, appreciation
  • Electronic music -- China
