Rebecca Belford, Head of Technical Services, Conservatory Library (rbelford@oberlin.edu

Typical job duties:

  • Lead Con Library technical services team
  • Create, organize, and maintain documentation for Con Library Technical Services
  • Gather and share new titles lists and internal statistics for volumes and titles added/withdrawn
  • Catalog scores and Con Library special collections material
  • In consultation with Preparations Coordinator, identify and recommend special processing/binding needs for cataloged materials;track bindery budget and adjust procedures as necessary 
  • Database maintenance, remediation, and modernization
  • Collection management support (deaccessioning, moves, reclasses, etc.)
  • NACO and local authority work; gather and submit "OOC" NACO and BIBCO statistics for the PCC
  • Troubleshoot OBIS or cataloging issues identified by Con Public Services Librarian; monitor Reference Log for OBIS-related questions
  • Communicate regularly with OCL-tech services leadership (Collections and Resource Services, East Asian Studies librarian) and OCL catalogers/metadata practitioners regarding tools, procedures, policies, and professional development
  • Participate in Con Library, OCL, and OhioLINK committees, task forces, etc.

Professional activities: active in MLA, MOUG; current focus on MLA leadership, past research on intersection of cataloging and discovery tools
Subject/language skills: Spanish (advanced); undergrad degree in philosophy; lapsed cellist; loves Excel; learning about OpenRefine and MarcEdit; previous positions include reference/instruction, collection development, and teaching graduate LIS courses in music librarianship and music cataloging

Kimberlie Fixx, Preparations Assistant (kimberlie.fixx@oberlin.edu)

Typical job duties

  • Hiring, training, and supervision of student staff, who perform basic core preparations tasks
  • Create and proofread bindery tickets for hardbound materials
  • Prepare all scores and media for the library stacks (marking, labeling, checking barcodes and call numbers for accuracy)
  • Prepare all periodicals for the shelves

Preparations and mending expertise:

  • Primary Con Library point of contact with external bindery vendor
  • Ensure complete and usable performance material, including configuring or taping loose leaves and turn sheets in scores and parts
  • Tip-ins for print material; addition of media pockets
  • Assess damaged material: perform repairs and mending (tears, warping, damaged spines, loose pages) and determine when to send for rebind or conservation
  • Assess gift scores for condition
  • Produce archival copies of material for lending (Annapolis Brass Quintet)
  • Prepare 4-flaps and enclosures for materials on the shelves

Faith Hoffman, Music Cataloger (faith.hoffman@oberlin.edu)

Typical responsibilities include:

  • Cataloging scores and sound recordings
  • Local authority work
  • Database maintenance, remediation, and modernization
  • Collection management support

Area of specialized subject knowledge or expertise:

  • Musical theater, opera
  • Previous library experience in acquisitions and stacks management
  • Liturgical knowledge of Latin
