Sets, multivolume works with relatively few volumes. Individual volumes usually have their own order records, which may or may not come in on the same bib record. Some may be cataloged as a multi-volume monograph, and some may be cataloged individually. Generally the choice to catalog volumes individually is made in order to provide a level of access not possible with a set record.
May or may not be “volume 1”; publication order often does not match volume number order.
Look up the volume in front of you by title, author, or keyword. It may turn out we already have another volume, in which case treat as ‘subsequent volume’.
Decide whether to treat as set or single title (you can revisit this later… don’t agonize). There may be copy for the single volume and/or an open multi-volume mono record. DO NOT choose a serial record.
If existing record(s) is/are analytic (separate bib), continue to analyze unless highly compelling reason to combine.
If the first record is for the set, determine whether to change to analyzed volumes.
