Leopold Mozart, Versuch einer gründlichen Violinschule (1756) is a key to performance practice in the eighteenth century. It is to the violin as C.P.E. Bach is to the keyboard, Versuch über die wahre Art das Clavier zu spielen (1753) and Johann Joachim Quantz to the flute, Versuch einer Anweisung die Flöte traversiere zu spielen (1752).
The first English translation was published in 1948, with a preface by Albert Einstein, after nearly two centuries and many versions:
